Origin and history

The house at 8 Rue de la Grand'Côte in Albi is a typical example of 14th century medieval civil architecture. Built in wooden panels with a brick fill, it is distinguished by its second floor in corbellation, a common technique at the time to gain space in height while preserving the grip on the ground. A strong projection of the roof, characteristic of the Albige houses of this period, protects the facades from the weather on both sides of the street. The original structure seems to have undergone changes over the centuries, partially altering its primitive arrangement.

Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 25 January 1940, this house illustrates the vernacular architectural heritage of Albi. Only the two facades on street enjoy this protection, highlighting their heritage value. The building's location in the historic centre of Albi is located in a neighbourhood marked by artisanal and commercial activity in the Middle Ages. Half-timbered houses, like this one, often served as housing for merchants or artisans, while sometimes sheltering shops on the ground floor.

Available data from the Merimée database and Monumentum indicate that the exact address corresponds to the Insee 8004 code in the Tarn department. The accuracy of its geographic location is estimated as "passible" (note 5/10), which may reflect minor uncertainties about its exact location in the archives. No information is provided concerning its access to the public, its current vocation (housing, commerce, museum) or any modern facilities.
