Origin and history
The church of Saint-Rémy de Saint-Rémy-sur-Avre, dedicated to Saint Remi de Reims, is attested from 1063 in a cartular of the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Coulombs. In the 12th century it marked the border between the Duchy of Normandy and the French royal domain, on which the locality depended. Originally priory, it was rebuilt in Gothic style flamboyant around 1490, although parts (such as the nave) date from 1150.
The construction was initiated in 1185 by the seigneur Beaulieu de Chartres, the first known historical sponsor. The building was thoroughly renovated in the 18th century after its acquisition by the Duke of Penthièvre, lord of Vernon and owner of the castle of Bizy. It was listed as a historical monument in 1930 and has a Renaissance glass window and seven stained glass windows in 1906, illustrating religious scenes.
Architecturally, the church consists of a nave without a side, a transept and a choir with a flat bedside, covered with a wooden crib. Its western portal, decorated with niches housing figures, reflects the influence of the Renaissance. The frame arrow, covered with slates, dominates the first span of the nave. Today, it depends on the parish of Sainte-Thérèse-en-Vallée-d'Avre, in the diocese of Chartres.
