Origin and history
The Youth Hostel Port-sur-Saône is a tree log building designed by the Martinet brothers, architects specializing in wood use. It was first erected in Paris in 1937 for the International Exhibition of "Arts and Techniques Applied to Modern Life", in the section "Waters and Forests". This pavilion was intended to illustrate architectural innovation and modern uses of wood, while highlighting wood burning cooking.
At the closing of the Exhibition in November 1937, the hostel was dismantled and rebuilt in Port-sur-Saône in January 1938 at a cost of 300,000 francs. It was initially used to house students of the departmental school of wood and forest fuels, inaugurated in the city in September 1938. Its interior layout included a large common room, dormitories on the floors, and technical spaces, all surrounded by a park.
The building, representative of 1930s wooden architecture, was listed as a historic monument in 2018 for its historical and technical interest. Protection covers the entire hostel and its park, excluding ancillary buildings. Today, it remains a rare testimony of the architectural experiments of the inter-war period, mixing functionality, forestry pedagogy and constructive innovation.
