Origin and history
The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assumption of Chandai is a religious building located in the centre of the village of Chandai, in the department of Orne, Normandy. It depends on the Catholic parish of "Saint Martin en Ouche" within the diocese of Séez. Its architecture reflects a typical cross plan, with an east-west orientation, with the choir facing east and the porch facing west.
The church's history dates back to the late 15th or early 16th century. His initial bell tower, once positioned on the edge of the nave, was destroyed by fire on September 3, 1841. It was rebuilt in 1847 as a bell tower next to the right side of the nave, in brick, with a square base and three octagonal floors surmounted by a lantern and an arrow. This tower tower is today a distinctive element of the building.
Inside the church is a crypt containing four funeral vaults, including the eighth Duke of the Force and members of his family. The furniture, dating from the 19th century, is of neo-Gothic style, just like the altar, decorated with woodwork sculptures depicting St Peter with a key, St Paul with a sword, and in the center, the scene of the Supper. These artistic and historical elements make it a significant religious and cultural heritage of the region.
