The part preserved as a witness in the middle of the search field and measuring two metres in front by four metres in depth (Box B 1254): classification by order of 26 January 1934
Origin and history
The Roc de Marcamps deposit, located in Prignac-et-Marcamps en Gironde (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), is a major archaeological site dating from the Upper Paleolithic period. This monument, classified by ministerial decree in 1934, retains some of the remains searched as historical witness. The protected area is two metres frontal by four metres deep, providing an overview of ancient human occupations in this area.
The site was officially recognized as a Historic Monument, stressing its importance for understanding prehistoric societies. The available coordinates place the deposit at 4 Chemin de Pair Non Pair, although the accuracy of its location is considered poor (level 5/10). No additional information is provided on specific discoveries or on-site excavation campaigns.
The legal protection of the deposit, effective since 1934, concerns only a small portion of the initial search field. This classification aims to preserve a material witness to human activities during the higher Paleolithic period, marked by major technological and artistic innovations. The site is part of a wider regional context where prehistoric deposits are frequent, reflecting a dense occupation of the Aquitaine valleys by hunter-gatherers.
