Origin and history
Beaumont Manor House is an iconic building located in Joué-en-Charnie, in the Sarthe department (Pays de la Loire region). Built between the 15th and 17th centuries, it embodies the residential architecture of the historical region of Maine. Its characteristic facades, roofs and fireplaces reflect the stylistic evolutions of this period, mixing medieval and Renaissance influences.
The monument has been partially protected as historical monuments since 20 April 1980. This inscription specifically concerns the facades and roofs of the manor house, the communes and the entrance pavilion, as well as five chimneys (four in the manor house and one in the pavilion). These architectural elements testify to the heritage importance of the site, preserved in spite of centuries.
Located 1 km north of the town of Joué-en-Charnie, the mansion is part of a typical rural landscape of the Sarthe. Its history remains closely linked to that of the region, marked by an ancient human occupation and a seigneurial tradition. Visiting periods, organised annually, allow to discover this unknown local heritage.
The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) highlight its role in the Sarthois architectural landscape, without specifying its former owners or exact functions. The lack of details about its occupants or its initial vocation leaves room for assumptions about its past use, probably residential or related to the surrounding farm.
The Beaumont mansion thus illustrates the diversity of the built heritage of the Pays de la Loire, between manor houses, castles and fortified farms. Its ranking among historical monuments makes it a privileged witness to local history, like the other buildings on the list of protected monuments of the Sarthe.
