Origin and history
The church Notre-Dame de Cluny is a Catholic religious building located in the municipality of Cluny, Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Its construction lasted from the 12th century to the 14th century, with a major phase in the 4th quarter of the 13th century. This monument illustrates medieval religious architecture, marked by Gothic influences and a long history linked to Cluny Abbey, the major spiritual centre of the time.
The site of the church extended for centuries, with successive modifications and additions. The western gate, for example, was damaged in the 18th century, reflecting the vicissitudes of the building over time. The original 18th-century stained glass windows were destroyed during a bombing in 1944 during World War II. They were replaced by contemporary works by artist P. Choutet, marking a fusion between ancient heritage and modern creation.
The church of Notre-Dame houses remarkable furniture, including 17th-century stalls from the church of the Celestines of Lyon, a 13th-century cross Christ, and a modern polyptych made in 1983 by Michel Bouillot. These elements reflect the artistic and historical richness of the site. Classified as a historical monument in 1862, the church is a symbol of the religious and architectural heritage of Burgundy-Franche-Comté, attracting visitors and researchers for its history and artistic treasures.
