Origin and history

La Porte de l'Est, also known as Tour des Gardes, is a fortified town gate located in Saint-Papoul, Aude department. Built in the 13th century, it was part of the ramparts built around the village to defend it. The building consists of a rectangular tower pierced with a broken arched door, equipped with a harrow system to control access. Inside, the eardrum is surmounted by a 16th century statue of the Virgin with the Child, which was added after the initial construction.

This gate was built under the episcopate of Guillaume de Cardaillac (1328-1348), third bishop of Saint-Papoul, as part of the fortifications of the village. In addition to its defensive role, the Watchtower also served as an episcopal prison, illustrating its dual military and judicial use. It was listed as historic monuments by order of 17 February 1926, thereby recognizing its heritage value.

The East Gate is at the intersection of the Rue de la Tour des Gardes and Place de la Bascule, marking the location of the old enclosure. Its architecture reflects medieval fortification techniques, while integrating religious elements such as the Marian statue. Today, it remains a testimony of the urban defensive systems of the Middle Ages in the Occitan region.
