Origin and history

The Grand Priory of the Order of Malta is a monument located in Arles, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Although its exact period of construction or activity is not specified in the available sources, its name refers to a direct connection with the Order of St John of Jerusalem, better known as the Order of Malta. This order, both religious and military, played a major role in Europe and the Mediterranean, notably through its commandaries and priories, which served as administrative, spiritual and charitable centres.

Priories of the Order of Malta were often located in strategic cities, such as Arles, historical and economic charity in Provence. These institutions participated in local life by providing care to pilgrims and the sick, while playing a role in the social and religious organization of the region. Their architecture usually reflected their dual vocation, mixing defensive elements and spaces dedicated to reception or prayer.

Future

Sold as a national property to painter and collector Jacques Réattu, it became in 1868, the municipal museum of Fine Arts.

In the 20th century, the museum focused on contemporary art and photography.
