Origin and history
La Fontaine des Cinq-Plaies de Lannion, in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany, dates from the 18th century. Built of cut granite, it served to feed the local village and is distinguished by its access via a double staircase. This monument, typical of Breton religious architecture, reflects the importance of water points in rural communities of the time.
Ranked a historical monument by decree of 22 December 1927, the fountain illustrates the Christian heritage of the region. Its inscription in the Mérimée base and its precise location (4 Rue Bellevue) testify to its official recognition. The property belongs to the municipality of Lannion, stressing its anchoring in the territory and its historical role.
In the 18th century, fountains like this played a central role in everyday life, combining practical utility and religious symbolism. In Brittany, these works were often linked to local legends or devotional practices, although the sources do not specify a specific tradition for this monument. Their preservation today allows us to study the construction techniques and social uses of water at this time.
