Gallo-Roman Gisement (portion) dit des Couvents (Box B 1227): by order of 22 August 1979

Origin and history

The Gallo-Roman deposit called Les Couvents is an archaeological site located in La Chapelle-Montbrandeix, in the Haute-Vienne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This site, partially preserved, is representative of the human occupation during the Gallo-Roman period, an era marked by the progressive Romanization of the Gallic territories after the Roman conquest. The place called the Convents, where the deposit is located, evokes an ancient occupation, although its present name is probably after Roman times.

The site was officially recognized for its historical and archaeological significance, which led to its classification as historic monuments on 22 August 1979. This classification protects a portion of the deposit, identified under Cadastre B 1227, and highlights its heritage value to the commune and the region. Today, the site belongs to the municipality of La Chapelle-Montbrandeix, although information about its accessibility to the public or its current use remains limited in available sources.

The Gallo-Roman period in Limousin, a region of which the Haute-Vienne is part, was characterized by a social and economic organization centred around the villa (Roman agricultural estates), roads and small urban centres. Archaeological deposits such as the Convents are used to study lifestyles, agricultural and craft techniques, as well as cultural exchanges between local populations and Roman settlers. These sites provide valuable insight into the transition from Iron Age to Roman Antiquity in this part of Gaul.
