Origin and history

The mill of Saint-Martin-au-Laërt, located in Saint-Martin-lez-Tatinghem in the Hauts-de-France, is a flour mill built in 1801, during the first quarter of the 19th century. This monument, now classified, stands out as the only such example in the department of Pas-de-Calais. Its architecture and mechanism, typical of the time, reflect the milling techniques used at the beginning of the industrial era.

Originally, the mill belonged to Jean-François Speneux, before passing into the hands of André Lardeur, then Edward Lardeur in 1840. Reborn in 1851, he ceased his activity in 1867 and fell into ruin until 1978. In that year, he was acquired by Mr Huart, who undertook a complete restoration between 1978 and 1983, with the help of the A.R.A.M. Nord-Pas-de-Calais. The works concerned the masonry, the gallery, the wings, the mechanism, as well as the interior floors and stairs.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 9 October 2001, the mill is a rare testimony of local industrial history. Its inclusion in the inventory of protected monuments underlines its heritage importance. After decades of abandonment, its restoration has preserved a key element of the milling heritage of Hauts-de-France.
