Origin and history

The Festival de Ramatuelle is a lively festival of entertainment, mixing theatre, humour and variety, held every year from August 1 to 11 in the green theatre of Ramatuelle, specially created for the occasion. This festival was designed to highlight this Provencal village located about ten kilometers south of Saint-Tropez, while becoming a major summer cultural event.

The festival was founded in 1985 by Jacqueline Franjou, former municipal councillor and vice-president of the Ramatuelle tourist office, and Jean-Claude Brially, with the support of Anne Philipe and the municipality. He pays tribute to Gérard Philipe, an iconic actor buried in the commune. After the disappearance of Jean-Claude Briely in 2007, Michel Boujenah took the artistic direction of the festival.

Since 2014, the festival has included Classic Nights, three evenings dedicated to classical music under the direction of Laurent Petitgirard. The varied programming includes classical and contemporary plays, artists of variety and comedians. Since its creation, the festival has welcomed more than 2,100 artists and 370 productions, contributing to the discovery of talents such as Christelle Chollet, Éric Antoine or Alex Lutz.

The green theatre, located in a former field, is the emblematic setting of this event that combines culture and heritage in a Provencal natural setting. Today, the festival is considered a must-see of summer, attracting a faithful and varied audience.
