Origin and history

The covered market of Sainte-Hermine, located in the Vendée department ( Pays de la Loire region), was built in the 4th quarter of the 19th century. This monument, inscribed in the inventory of Historical Monuments by decree of 9 December 1985, illustrates the utility architecture of this period, dedicated to local trade. Its location, 1 Mining Square, makes it a central place in the economic and social life of the municipality.

Designed by architect Abel Filuzeau, the covered market is now owned by the municipality of Sainte-Hermine. Although its GPS location is considered "passable" (note 5/10), its official address and cadastre (AD 238) are clearly referenced in the Merimée database. This type of construction reflects the importance of covered halls and markets in small French cities at the end of the 19th century, serving as a meeting point for residents and traders.

Covered markets, such as St. Hermine's, played a key role in rural supply and sociability. At that time, the Pays de la Loire, a region marked by an agricultural and craft economy, saw the development of public infrastructure to structure trade. These buildings, often of stone or metal, also symbolized the modernization of the villages under the Third Republic, a period of transformation of urban and rural spaces.
