Windmill (Case C 19): inscription by order of 17 October 1977
Origin and history
The windmill of Saint-Cyr-des-Gâts is an emblematic building located in the municipality of the same name, in Vendée (Pays de la Loire). This monument, whose location is specified by GPS coordinates and a postal address (123 La Pierre Martin), was entered in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 17 October 1977. Although closed to public visit, it is now used as tourist accommodation, with possibilities of overnight or weekly rental.
Windmills played a central role in the rural economies of western France, particularly in Vendée, where they were used mainly to grind cereals for local populations. Their construction often reflected local craftsmanship, adapted to the region's climatic conditions and agricultural needs. These buildings, in addition to their utility function, also marked the landscape and structured community activities, becoming identity landmarks for surrounding villages.
