Windmill known as Moulin-vieux-de-la-Frandière (old) (cad. AL 181): inscription by order of 14 January 1977

Origin and history

The Moulin Vieux de la Frandière, located in Barbâtre, is a windmill listed as a Historic Monument. This monument, known as Moulin-vieux-de-la-Frandière, is located precisely at 40 a Rue de la Frandière, in the Vendée department (85), in the Pays de la Loire region. Its official inscription dates from 14 January 1977, by ministerial decree, which shows its heritage importance.

Windmills, like the Frandière, played a central role in the rural economy of the coastal and agricultural regions of western France. In Barbâtre, on the island of Noirmoutier, these infrastructures were mainly used to grind cereals for local populations. Their presence reflected a community organization where the mill was often a gathering and exchange place, in addition to its practical usefulness. The conservation of this mill now offers a material testimony of craft techniques and lifestyles in this geographical area.

The location of the monument, although documented, is considered to be of poor accuracy (note 5/10), which may indicate uncertainties about its exact location or changes in the surrounding landscape. Available data is mainly from the Merimée database and sources such as Monumentum, without further details on its specific history or possible owners.

Registration for the Historical Monuments in 1977 aims to protect this built heritage, recognizing its architectural and historical value. However, the practical information concerning its current access (visits, rentals, etc.) is not specified in the sources consulted, leaving open the question of its contemporary use or possible restoration.
