Facades and roofs (Case C 321, 322): inscription by order of 23 September 1966
Origin and history
The building adjacent to the gate of La Cadène in Saint-Émilion is an old 14th century guard corps. It is distinguished by its defensive architecture, with a panel tower and a floor pierced by a door window, typical of this medieval period. The building, located in the Gironde department, reflects the strategic role of fortified gates in the protection of cities in the Middle Ages.
The gate of La Cadène, to which this building is joined, was part of the ramparts of Saint-Émilion, a prosperous city thanks to the wine trade from that time on. The guard corps like this were used to control the entrances and to ensure the security of the inhabitants, while symbolizing the seigneurial or communal authority. Their presence attests to the urban and military organization of medieval cities in Aquitaine.
Ranked a Historic Monument since 1966, the building has seen its facades and roofs protected by ministerial decree. This official recognition underscores its heritage importance, although its exact location remains approximate according to available sources. Today, its state of conservation and accessibility to the public are not specified in current data.
