Origin and history
The barn at the tithes of Fousfur is an ecclesiastical mansion located in Espins, Calvados. Unlike many religious buildings of the time, there is no chapel. From the 12th century, this domain was given to the religious of Souleuvre, marking its anchor in the Norman monastic heritage. The tithes barn itself, the central element of the site, dates from the 14th century, reflecting the architectural techniques and agricultural needs of this medieval period.
In the 16th century, the prioral house was completely rebuilt, incorporating characteristic elements of the Renaissance, as evidenced by the armored fireplace still visible today. This house undergoes renovations in the 19th century, although the 16th century chimney was preserved. Together, including the barn and fireplace, was inscribed in the Historic Monuments by order of 19 June 1995, highlighting its heritage value.
The site illustrates the evolution of an ecclesiastical domain over centuries, from its medieval origin to its modern transformations. Its history is closely linked to that of the religious of Souleuvre, although little specific details of their management or daily life are mentioned in the available sources. The current location at 2 Rue de la Grange aux Dimes confirms its anchoring in the Normandy countryside.
