Origin and history
La Croix de Ramourouscole is a monumental cross located in Bains, in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Dated from 1631, it is located on the edge of the road linking the hamlet of Ramourouscoule to Séneujols. Its inscription in historic monuments, by order of 11 June 1930, bears witness to its heritage importance.
The structure of the cross rests on a square base surmounted by a pedestal, itself supporting a square cross-sectional drum at the corners. The cross, with a square section, is decorated with florets with quadrilobed roses. On the drum there is the date of 1631, the inscription "AVE MARIA", as well as partially erased initials, probably those of the donor.
The iconography of the cross is marked by two sculptures: an immortal Christ with strong hair and mustache, and a Virgin surmounted by an angel with deployed wings. These stylistic details, as well as traces of missing iron nails, reveal a typical 17th century religious art bill in the region.
According to sources, including Jean Chaize's work, this cross illustrates the local artistic traditions of Velay. Its location, at the crossroads, suggests a role both religious and symbolic for the inhabitants of the time, marking a place of devotion or gathering.
The cross is now owned by the municipality of Bains. Although its conservation status is not detailed, its location is estimated to be "a priori satisfactory" according to heritage databases. It remains an architectural and historical testimony of the Haute-Loire.
