Origin and history

The monument of the Deliberation, located in Place de la Délibération in Saint-Jean-de-Losne (Côte-d'Or), was designed to celebrate the Belle Défense of the city at the end of October 1636. This episode marked the victorious resistance of the inhabitants against the imperial troops of General Gallas, a founding event for local memory. The initiative for its construction came from Mayor Émile Petitjean, whose proposal, adopted by the municipal council on December 11, 1886, launched the project in the following years.

In 1890 the architect Félix Vionnois designed a monument structured in four parts: a quadrangular base decorated with niches and stone cannons, a square pedestal with bronze bas-reliefs and engraved marble tables, a porphyry truncated column, and a crowned town model. The bas-reliefs, the work of sculptor Mathurin Moreau, illustrate La Délibération (on the Saône side) and Les Combats sur les ramparts (on the church side). The coronation was made by the Dijonnais Jules Schanosky. Two historic cannons, the Embuscade and the Desaster (1864-1865), offered to the city in 1901, complete the ensemble.

Ranked a historic monument in total (including its original grids) by order of 2 March 2015, this monument belongs to the municipality. It symbolizes both the defensive identity of Saint-Jean-de-Losne and the tribute given by subsequent generations to this act of collective bravery. The associated guns, listed separately on July 22, 2013, reinforce its memorial and heritage dimension.
