Origin and history

The Memorial of the meeting of Alsace in France in 1648 is erected in Giromagny, a municipality of the Territory of Belfort in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built in the 18th century, this monument marks a major political event: the official integration of Alsace into the Kingdom of France, which was established by the Treaties of Westphalia in 1648. Although its construction was nearly a century later than the event it commemorates, it symbolizes the sustainability of this territorial union.

Filed by order of 12 December 1916, the monument is now owned by the municipality of Giromagny. Its location at 39 Grande Rue is documented in the Merimée base, although geographical accuracy is considered fair (note 5/10). No information is available on its current accessibility (visits, public use) or conservation status. The sources mention only its protected status and its anchor in local history.

The monument is part of a regional context marked by the territorial conflicts between France and the Holy Roman Empire. Its creation in the eighteenth century reflects a desire to retrospectively legitimize French authority in Alsace, while the region remains a geopolitical issue. In Giromagny, as in other border towns, these monuments also served to strengthen national identity among local populations, often subject to changes in sovereignty.
