Origin and history

The 17th century cross on the road to Coiffy is a historical monument located in Varennes-sur-Amance, in the Haute-Marne department (52), in the Grand Est region. Built in the 17th century, it is representative of the cross of road or crossroads erected at that time, often to mark a place of prayer, a gathering point or a territorial limit. These monuments, typical of rural heritage, also served as landmarks for travellers and pilgrims.

In the 17th century, the Champagne-Ardenne region, now integrated into the Great East, was marked by a mainly agricultural and artisanal economy. Crosses of this type played an important social and religious role in local communities, serving as meeting points for processions, collective prayers or public announcements. Their presence also reflected the influence of the Catholic Church in daily life, as well as the religious beliefs and practices of the time.

These monuments, often simple in form, were nevertheless strong symbols of piety and community organization.
