Origin and history

The 17th century cross on the way to Bassancourt is a historical monument located in the commune of Val-de-Meuse, in the department of Haute-Marne (52), in the Grand Est region. This monument, dated from the seventeenth century, has been included in the inventory of Historical Monuments since October 10, 1929. It belongs to the municipality and is located close to the road to Bassoncourt, according to the coordinates available.

The road crosses, like this one, were often erected in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to mark places of devotion, crossroads or territorial boundaries. They played an important role in the religious and social life of the rural communities of the time. In Champagne-Ardenne, a region with a strong agricultural tradition, these monuments also served as landmarks for travellers and pilgrims.

Their presence reflects the importance of the Christian faith in the organization of rural areas and local movements.
