Origin and history
Saint-François-Xavier Church is a Catholic religious building located in Monticello, Upper Corsica. Built in the 17th century for its nave, it was modified in the 18th century by the addition of the choir and a dome at the cross of the transept. Its baroque architecture is characterized by a cruciform plan, an octagonal outer dome surmounted by a circular lantern, and a trapu bell tower with two square floors. The nave, covered with a painted vault, and the lateral chapels of the transept house painted decorations, while the building ends with a flat bedside.
Classified as a Historical Monument in 1992, this church illustrates the religious architectural evolution in Corsica between the 17th and 18th centuries. The dome, visible from the outside in the form of an octagonal drum, is illuminated by four curved bays and reinforced by ailerons in the form of reverse consoles. The bell tower, located in the southeast, combines square floors and a cylindrical lantern. The building, owned by the municipality of Monticello, bears witness to the Baroque island heritage, mixing local influences and continental styles.
The protected elements include the entire church, classified by decree of 14 December 1992. The site is referenced in the Mérimée and Clochers bases of France, highlighting its heritage importance. The exact address, 458 San Francesco in Monticello, and its Insee code (2B168) confirm its anchoring in the department of Haute-Corse, within the Corsican region. No information is available about its current accessibility or contemporary uses (visits, rentals, etc.).
