Origin and history
The death monument of Couthures-sur-Garonne commemorates the 33 inhabitants who died during the First World War. Before 1914, the municipality had 792 inhabitants. The municipal council ordered this monument to sculptor Paul Laguiens, who made it in bronze between 1920 and 1922. It represents a triumphant Gallic cock of the German eagle, symbol of the French victory.
Located at the intersection of the streets of the Tilleuls and the Post Office, this monument has been listed as historical monuments since October 21, 2014. It includes the monument itself, its square and its gate. The choice of the sculptor and the strong symbolism of the Gaulish cock reflect the importance of this place of memory for the local community.
The monument is owned by the commune and appears in the Merimée and Monumentum bases. Its inscription as a historic monument underscores its heritage and artistic value. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its central role in the collective memory of Couthures-sur-Garonne and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
