Origin and history
The Saint-Corneille-et-Saint-Cyprien Church, also known as the Saint-Corneille Church, is a Catholic religious building located in Chartrettes, Seine-et-Marne. It was mentioned for the first time during its dedication in 1224, marking its medieval origin. After damage related to the English occupation during the Hundred Years War, it was partially rebuilt.
In 1793, during the French Revolution, the remains of King Louis VII, originally preserved in the nearby Barbeau Abbey, were transferred to this church. This transfer is part of a context of destruction of religious and monarchical symbols, where the Abbey of Barbeau is endangered.
The building was restored several times in the 20th century: in 1976, then in the 1980s, where fine craftsmen restored the altar of the Virgin under the direction of the architect of the Buildings of France. A new construction campaign took place in 1985. Despite projects aborted in 2005, an advanced deterioration has prompted the Heritage Foundation to launch a collection in 2016 for work started in 2018.
Inscribed to historical monuments by decree of 23 November 1946, the church belongs to the commune of Chartrettes. Its central location, between the church square and the town hall, makes it a key part of the local heritage.
