Origin and history

The 2 Croix de Balléville are historical monuments located in the commune of Balléville, in the department of Vosges (Great East). These road crosses, carved in stone, date from the first quarter of the 16th century. Their architectural style and materiality reflect the religious and artisanal practices of the late medieval period in Lorraine.

Classified by order of 3 June 1908, these crosses became property of the commune of Balléville. Their location, although documented (3 Rue des Jardins), is considered to be of poor accuracy (level 5 of 10). These monuments, typical of rural roads, often served as spiritual or commemorative landmarks for travellers and local residents.

Their preservation is part of a desire to protect the religious and cultural heritage of the Greater East region. Available data from the Merimée database and Monumentum highlight their historical importance, although little detailed information on their origin or sponsor is available. Their status as a Historic Monument guarantees their protection and presentation in the local landscape.
