Origin and history
The Bories of Velleron are a set of two dry stone huts, located in the commune of Velleron, in the department of Vaucluse. They bear the names of "cabin de la Moulette" and "cabin du shepherd". These traditional buildings, typical of the region, illustrate Provencal rural architecture and its adaptation to agricultural and pastoral needs.
The "cabin de la Moulette" derives its name from the Provençal Mouleto, meaning "small wheel". According to a local legend, a revolutionist would be a refugee to sharpen swords. There is indeed a grinding mill, as well as a grain mill, attesting to its versatile use. These bories, classified as historical monuments since 28 August 1974, are now owned by a private company.
Their listing as historic monuments underscores their heritage value. They are among the outstanding examples of dry stone constructions, an ancestral technique widespread in Provence. Their preservation allows us to understand the ways of life and know-how of rural communities in the past, where these shelters served as refuge, storage or craft workshops.
