Two protohistoric steles (Box ZL 159): by order of 30 June 1966
Origin and history
The two protohistoric steles of Goulien are located in the municipality of the same name, in Brittany, in the department of Finistère. These monuments, dated from the Protohistory, are significant archaeological remains of this period. Their presence reflects the ancient occupation of this territory, although their exact function is often subject to interpretation for this type of monument.
These steles were protected by a classification order on 30 June 1966, which underlines their heritage importance. Today they are owned by the commune of Goulien. Their location, although approximately known (5 Rue de la Mairie), only benefits from an accuracy considered fair (note of 5/10).
Protohistory in Brittany is marked by a society in transition, where local communities erect funeral or memorial monuments, often linked to cultural or religious practices. Steles, such as those of Goulien, could be used as territorial markers, funerary monuments or symbols of power. Their study provides a better understanding of the lifestyles and beliefs of the people of the time.
Available data, from sources such as Monumentum, indicate that these steles are now closed to the visit, without any mention of any tourist or cultural development. Their preservation is therefore mainly of scientific and heritage interest, typical of the monuments of this period in Brittany.
