Origin and history
The square fort and the Star Tower, also known as the round fort or former fort of the mills, form a military ensemble built in the early eighteenth century. Located at Llull, these two buildings were erected in 1725 to strengthen Collioure's coastal defences. They are connected by a covered road surrounded by ditches and ramparts, illustrating the military architecture of the time.
The square fort, surrounded by a deep ditch cut into the rock, and the Star Tower, protected by two square ramparts, constitute a coherent defensive system. These works, property of the state and managed by the Conservatoire du littoral, testify to the French military strategy under the Ancien Régime. Their heritage value is recognized by a classification as historical monuments in 1991.
Their location in Collioure, in the Pyrénées-Orientales, reflects the strategic importance of this coastal area close to the Spanish border. The presence of these forts is part of a context of geopolitical tensions and control of maritime trade in the western Mediterranean in the eighteenth century. Their preservation now allows us to study the fortification techniques of the period and their integration into the local landscape.
