Origin and history
The 3 dolmens of Saillac, located in the municipality of Saillac (Lot, Occitanie), constitute a megalithic ensemble inscribed under the title of Historical Monuments. Among these structures, Dirau's dolmen (caster D 129p, 130p) was officially protected by order of 25 June 1959. These vestiges, typical of prehistoric funeral architecture, illustrate the cultural and religious practices of neolithic societies in this region of southwestern France.
The location of the dolmens, although documented in the Merimée database under the code Insee 46247 (former Midi-Pyrénées region, now integrated with Occitanie), remains approximate, with an accuracy assessed as "passible" (note 5/10). Their presence is part of a wider archaeological landscape, marked by the density of megalithic sites in Quercy. These monuments, often associated with collective funeral rites, shed light on the social and spiritual organization of local prehistoric communities, whose agro-pastoral activities structured the territory long before the Roman era.
