Origin and history

The 4 Croix de Breuvannes-en-Bassigny are historic monuments located in the commune of Breuvannes-en-Bassigny, in the Grand Est region. These crosses, dating from the 16th century, are emblematic of the religious architecture of this period. Their presence in the village reflects the importance of Christian symbols in the spatial and social organization of the rural communities of the time.

Classified by ministerial decree on 10 January 1931, these crosses are protected as elements of the national heritage. Their location, although documented (1 Rue de la Gare), remains approximate according to available sources, with a location accuracy assessed as fair. These monuments belong to the commune and illustrate the role of the cross of road or crossroads in the daily and spiritual life of the inhabitants of the Haute-Marne in the sixteenth century.

At that time, the region, then integrated into Champagne-Ardenne, was marked by a rural and artisanal economy. Crosses often served as landmarks, places of prayer or commemoration, strengthening community cohesion around faith. Their preservation until today bears witness to their heritage value and their anchoring in local history.
