City gate, ramparts and city walls in France

Like castles, cities have been fortified with a defence system comprising ramparts, gates and defensive towers. Having lost their defensive function and obstructed the development of cities, a large part of the walls disappeared.

Fortunately, much of the remains of these defences are preserved and protected as historical monuments.

We thought it essential to introduce them by region and department.
