Gallo-Roman vestiges of France

Geographically, the Roman Gaul covers present-day France with the exception of the Midi and Rhone Valley which, grouped in the Narbonnaise province, were considered to be part of Roman Italy. The main city was Lugdnum (Lyon), the capital of Gauls.

The covered period goes from the conquest of Gaul by Julius Caesar in -52, to the battle of Soissons in 486, which marks the advent of the Merovingian dynasty of the Francs.
