Origin and history

The Abbey of Saint-Genis-des-Fontaines, founded in the 8th or early 9th century by Abbé Sentimerus, is mentioned for the first time in 819. Destroyed by raids (probably Norman), it was rebuilt thanks to a royal act of Lothaire in 981, marking its renewal under the protection of the Counts of the Roussillon and then the kings of Aragon. The church, enlarged and consecrated in 1153, illustrates its medieval apogee, while a marble cloister, completed in 1271, is added in the thirteenth century.

The French Revolution chased the monks in 1789, and the buildings became private or national property. The cloister, dismantled in the 20th century, is partly sold to antique dealers: original elements go to the United States (Philadelphia Museum of Art) or the Louvre, while copies are made. In the 1980s, a restoration campaign allowed for its partial return to the site, thanks to the purchase of the Mesnuls (Yvelines) coins and old photographs.

The abbey church, classified as a historical monument in 1966, preserves a typical Romanesque plan (a unique nave, three apse transept) and baroque altarpieces. Its facade is famous for its white marble lintel, the oldest dated Romanesque sculpture (early 11th century). The ossuary and tombstones, like that of Lady Alisende (1187), bear witness to her funeral role for the local elites.

The decline of the abbey, begun before the Revolution, accelerated with its secularization. Conventual buildings, divided between private owners, now house houses. Only the southeast quarter of the cloister, classified in 1924, had escaped dispersal. The work of the years 1980-1994 enabled this ensemble to be partially reconstructed, combining original pieces, copies and new elements carved in local marble.

The cloister's capitals, in the "late novel" style (1250-1260), are distinguished by their angular reliefs and flats, perhaps intended to be painted. They represent a local fauna (tortue, rat, owl) and contrast with the refinement of other Catalan abbeys such as Serrabone. The use of polychrome marbles, typical of the region, reinforces their originality.

Today, the abbey embodies a hybrid heritage: place of worship (parochial church), monastic vestige and symbol of the hazards of conservation. Its history reflects the political upheavals (Aragonese and then French Roussillon), the religious changes (Revolution, secularization) and the challenges of preserving heritage in the face of the art market.
