Geoffroy de Praelles - Founder
Create the priory around 1115.
Origin and history
The former Abbey of Ablis, located in the Yvelines in Île-de-France, has its origins in the early twelfth century. This Benedictine priory was founded around 1115 by Geoffroy de Praelles, a character whose name remains associated with his creation. Originally dependent on the Abbey of Jehoshaphat, this religious place is part of the medieval monastic network, marked by the influence of Benedictine orders in the region.
During the 16th century, more precisely at the beginning of the second quarter (circa 1525-1530), the abbey underwent a notable reconstruction, particularly visible on the pattern of its northern facade. This period corresponds to a phase of architectural renewal, often linked to the progressive adoption of Renaissance styles in religious buildings. The holes, especially the windows in the south, were reworked in the 18th century, reflecting late functional or aesthetic adaptations.
The monument has been partially protected since December 7, 1925, when its street façade is listed in the Historic Monuments. Today owned by the municipality of Ablis, the former abbey retains traces of its monastic past, although its contemporary uses (visits, rentals, accommodation) are not specified in the available sources. Its exact address, 70 rue Pierre-Troué, and its Insee code (78003) confirm its anchoring in the territory of the Yvelines, near Versailles.
