Origin and history

The abbey of Saint-Amand, originally called the abbey of Elnon, was founded around 633-639 by the monk Amand of Maastricht on a plot at the confluence of the Scarpe and Elnon, under the patronage of Dagobert I. It became a major intellectual and spiritual home in the ninth century, home to a library, scriptorium, and scholars like Milon and Hucbald. The abbey was a key actor in the Carolingian renaissance, even welcoming the burials of two children of Charles le Chauve.

The history of the abbey is marked by repeated destructions: it was burned five times (in 883, 1066, 1340, 1424 and 1477), each time it was rebuilt. In the 17th century, Abbé Nicolas du Bois undertook an ambitious reconstruction in the Flemish Baroque style, building a 183 m long quadrilateral monastery surrounded by towers and moat. The abbey church, 140 m long, exceeded in size Notre-Dame de Strasbourg, with a funeral crypt and a choir reserved for religious.

The French Revolution rang the abbey: declared national in 1789, it was dismantled between 1797 and 1820. Only the abbey tower (classified in 1848) and the entrance pavilions remain today. The tower now houses the municipal museum, testifying to this missing heritage.

Among the treasures associated with the abbey are exceptional manuscripts, such as the Gospels of Francis II (IXth century) or the Ludwigslied (Xth century), one of the oldest Germanic texts, discovered by Dom Mabillon in 1672. These works illustrate the cultural influence of Saint-Amand, linked to its scriptorium and its role in preserving medieval knowledge.

The architecture of the abbey reflected its importance: the church, with double transept on the cross of Lorraine, combined Gothic traditions and Baroque innovations. Its golden vaults, its stands reserved for monks, and its royal staircase of black marble made it an admired building. The crypt, rebuilt on the foundations of the seventh century, recalled the merovingian origins of the site.

Future

The Municipal Museum is located in the tower of the former Abbey Church. Admission to the museum is free of charge.
