Origin and history

The Saint-Sauveur Abbey of Villeloin, founded in the ninth century by the Knights Mainard and Mainerius, was first placed under the authority of the Abbey of Cormery. Consecrated in 859 by Archbishop Herard, it became a prosperous Benedictine monastery with land and a large community. In 965 the monks obtained the right to elect their own abbot, marking a step towards their autonomy.

In the Middle Ages, the abbey experienced periods of destruction, particularly during the Hundred Years War, where it was ravaged by British troops in 1360 and 1412. Despite these trials, it was raised through donations and reconstructions, as evidenced by the work undertaken from 1417 onwards. In 1301 King Philip the Bel stayed there, stressing his strategic and religious importance.

In modern times, the abbey was marked by figures such as Michel de Marolles, abbot from 1626 to 1674, who gathered an exceptional collection of prints. The reform of the St Maur congregation was introduced in 1667, but the French Revolution ended its monastic existence. Ranked a historical monument in 1927, it preserves remains of the twelfth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, including a Romanesque church, a Renaissance pavilion and towers.

The archaeological excavations of the 1920s revealed two precious abbatial crusts, one in 13th century ivory and another in Limousin enamel, attesting to the prestige of his abbots. These objects, now preserved in museums, illustrate Villeloin's artistic and spiritual importance throughout the centuries.

The annals of the abbey, written by the monk Pierre Brunet in the seventeenth century, offer a detailed testimony of his convent life, his artistic works and his relations with the great lords. These writings, combined with the archives, reveal a spiritual, economic and cultural institution, deeply rooted in the history of Touraine.

Today, the Saint-Sauveur Abbey of Villeloin, although partially in ruins, remains a major architectural and historical testimony. Its protected elements, such as the gate of the convent or the towers of the drawbridge, recall its glorious past and the challenges it has overcome, from medieval invasions to the Revolution.
