Origin and history

The Saint-Séverin Abbey of Château-Landon was born at the beginning of the sixth century, when Saint Séverin, renowned for his miraculous healings, died in this locality in 506. On orders from Clovis, his son Childebert Ier built a church in his honour, with rich properties. In the 9th century, Sigebert I, king of Metz, founded a large abbey which took the name of Saint-Séverin and the dot of considerable income. The abbey became an annual pilgrimage site and a major religious centre in Gâtinais, a region of which Château-Landon was then the capital.

In the Middle Ages, the abbey was plagued by political and religious conflicts. In 1139 Louis VII installed regular canons, replacing secular canons. The abbey thrives with royal gifts, such as the Ponts-Percés mill in 1157, and houses a priory in Melun. However, it suffered destruction during the wars: in 1426, the English burned after a unsuccessful siege in Montargis, and then resumed it in 1468, burning much of the city. Despite these ravages, the abbey remains a symbol of the religious and political power of Château-Landon, alongside three parish churches and other monastic establishments.

In modern times, the abbey is marked by the wars of Religion. In 1567, German Huguenots looted the monastery and committed atrocities, before a new bag in 1587. In 1624 it joined the abbey of Saint-Victor in Paris, adopting reforms that influenced other religious communities. The abbey gradually declined and disappeared during the French Revolution. In the 19th century, its buildings were reassigned, now housing a retirement home. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1937 for its remains (church, cloister, crypt), it still bears witness to its glorious past, linked to figures such as Clovis, Childebert Ier or Foulque IV d'Anjou, ancestor of the Plantagenets.

The Abbey is situated in a rich geographical and historical context. Château-Landon, a fortified town of Gâtinais, was a commercial and religious crossroads, close to the fairs of Lagny-sur-Marne and Provins. Its architectural heritage, combining Romanesque and Gothic styles, reflects its medieval importance. Local limestone quarries, exploited since ancient times, have provided stones for Parisian monuments such as the Sacred Heart or the triumphal arch of the Star, highlighting the link between this territory and national history. Today, the abbey and its remains recall this prestigious past, between spirituality, royal power and historical conflicts.
