Origin and history

Sainte-Marie de Fontcaude Abbey, founded in 1154 by the Premontrés (Order of Saint Norbert), is a jewel of Languedoc Romanesque architecture. Nestled in a valley near Cazedarnes (Herault), it owes its name to a hot spring ("hot fountain" in Occitan). Its imposing choir, typical of the 12th century, and its sculptures attributed to the Master of Fontcaude (XIIIth century) bear witness to its medieval influence. The abbey was ravaged in 1577 during the Wars of Religion, then sold as national property to the French Revolution, falling into ruins in the 19th century.

Rediscovered in 1969 thanks to Abbé Joseph Giry, a local archaeologist, the Abbey was restored by the association Les Amis de Fontcaude, awarded for its efforts (Chefs-d'oeuvre en peril). The works revealed the church of Sainte-Marie, remains of the cloister, a foundry of bells and a mill. Since 1975, the site has been classified as a historic monument, and in 2014 its canonial buildings and abbey houses were registered. Today, the abbey houses a museum exhibiting a medieval manuscript and hosts cultural events, such as Gregorian chant concerts.

Integrated into the paths of Santiago de Compostela since 1995, it houses the Fraternité Jacquaire de Septimanie, whose annual ceremonies celebrate Saint Jacques on 25 July. The site, a property shared between an association and private individuals, combines religious heritage and tourist dynamics, with visits, exhibitions and guest rooms. Its night lighting and country setting make it an emblematic place for the Languedoc vineyards.
