Origin and history

The abbey of Sainte-Catherine-du-Mont de Rouen, originally named monastery of the Holy Trinity of Mount Rouen, was founded in the 11th century by Gosselin, Viscount of Rouen, Lord of Arques and Dieppe. This Benedictine masculine monastery, dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria, stood on Mount Sainte-Catherine, offering a strategic position overlooking the city. His first abbot came from Saint-Ouen Abbey in Rouen. Among his benefactors were major Norman personalities, such as William the Conqueror, his father Robert, Duke of Normandy, or Enguerrand de Marigny, who had there built a stone staircase in 1312 to facilitate access from Rouen.

The abbey had an important influence from its foundation, testing several other religious establishments in Normandy: the abbey of Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives (1043), the abbey of Tréport (1030), and the abbey of Cormeilles (1053). In 1045, its founder Gosselin became a monk there before being buried there in 1130 in front of the grand altar of the new church. The site, often disputed for its military value, was even transformed into a citadel in the 12th century, housing a castle built by Hugues de Gournay and Étienne d'Aumale in 1118 to resist the supporters of Guillaume Cliton.

The abbey also attracted distinguished pilgrims, such as Queen Mary of Brabant (1276) or King Louis the Hutin (1314), while Charles V visited it three times (1369, 1370, 1377). Despite its prestige, it was destroyed in January 1597 by order of Henri IV, his property being transferred to the Chartreuse de Bourbon-lèz-Gaillon. Today, its remains, located on the Sainte-Catherine coast in Rouen, have been protected as historical monuments since 1993, alongside the ruins of the Priory Saint-Michel and the Fort of Sainte-Catherine.

The site illustrates the importance of Norman abbeys in the Middle Ages, both as spiritual centres, places of power, and strategic points. Its destruction in the 16th century marked the end of an era when these institutions played a key role in the political and religious balance of the region. Recent excavations and protections preserve its memory, despite the almost total disappearance of its buildings.
