Origin and history

The Abbey of Notre-Dame de Cuissy, founded in the 12th century, was a regular abbey of the Order of Premontrés. It was erected in 1124 on land given by Gauthier de Jumigny and Ermengarde de Roucy, after a community led by Luc de Ronci, Dean of Laon, settled there in 1115. This community adopted the rule of Saint Norbert, founder of the order of the regular canons of Premontré.

Over the centuries, the abbey knew several notable abbots, such as Hugues II, who became general of the order in 1174, or John de Cergès, who authorized in 1245 the foundation of the abbey of Sainte-Élisabeth de Genlis. During the Wars of Religion, Abbé François de Castelnau had to alienate part of the abbey's property to support the community and pay the royal taxes. The abbey was reformed in 1641 by Anne-Michel de Castelnau, who retached it to the community of the Antique Rigueur de Prémontré.

Abandoned during the French Revolution, Cuissy Abbey left some 17th and 18th century remains, including a dovecote and a monumental gate. These elements, listed as historical monuments in 1928, bear witness to its past importance. The Abbé de Cuissy was also the patron of the cures of Dizy and La Ville-aux-Bois-lès-Dizy, where he perceived the tithe.

The current buildings, although partially disappeared, recall the influence of this abbey in the region. Its history is linked to that of the Premonstrated, a religious order that played a major role in the spiritual and economic life of the Laos. The preserved remains offer an overview of its architecture and organization in modern and classical times.
