Origin and history
Aérium Rocheclaine is a monument located in the commune of La Valla-en-Gier, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Dating from the second half of the sixteenth century, it is distinguished by its Renaissance well, an architectural element protected and classified under the Historical Monuments by decree of 23 February 1981. This well, located in the inner courtyard of the building, is the only element explicitly mentioned as protected in the available sources.
The monument is now the property of an association, although information about its access to the public (visits, rental, accommodation) is not specified in the available data. Its exact address, 5 Rue de l'Andeolaise, comes from GPS coordinates and the Merimée base, but the accuracy of its location is considered poor (note of 5/10), which can complicate its identification on the ground.
The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, to which La Valla-en-Gier belongs, was in the Renaissance a transitional zone between the urban influences of Lyon and the rural territories of the Forez and Pilat mountains. The wells of that time, often decorated, reflected the social status of the owners or local communities. Although little specific information is available on the detailed history of the Aérium Rocheclaine, its Renaissance well bears witness to the importance of water and decorative architecture in the constructions of this period.
