Origin and history

The Alfred-Canel Museum comes from the will of Alfred Canel (1803-1879), a lawyer, scholar and politician of Pont-Audemer. Passionate about the arts, science and culture, he founded the municipal library in 1836, and at the end of his life, in 1876, he formed collections for a future museum. When he died in 1879, he bequeathed his house, property and collections to the city. In 1884, the cantonal museum and the public library were inaugurated, merging written heritage and art objects in one place.

The Alfred Canel House, transformed into a museum space, now retains two complementary entities: a museum with permanent collections (beaux-arts, archaeology, natural sciences) and a contemporary space dedicated to temporary exhibitions. The Art and Science Gallery, built in the 19th century, exhibits paintings by the Rouen School and Norman artists, as well as archaeological and scientific objects. The Great Library, with its 15,000 ancient books (XVth–XIXth centuries), bears witness to Canel's erudition, as does his work firm, where his correspondences are preserved, including a letter from Gustave Flaubert.

Renovated in the 2000s, the museum reopens in 2004 with a modern extension allowing for various exhibitions. Labelled Musée de France and Maison d'écrire, it combines historical heritage and cultural dynamism. Its collections, enriched by works such as Travesti d'Emile Artus Boeswillwald (1920) or the landscapes of Auguste Bougourd, reflect both the local anchor and the artistic opening of Normandy. The Norman Library fonds, renowned for its 20,000 documents, reinforces this heritage dimension.

The museum is distinguished by its cabinet atmosphere of curiosities, where paintings, fossils, beetles and ceramics coexist under a zenithal light. The topics discussed — national archaeology, religious art, natural sciences — make it a multidisciplinary place. Its address, 64 rue de la République in Pont-Audemer (Eure), makes it a central point of Norman cultural life, between local memory and contemporary creation.
