Origin and history
The pseudo-menhirs du Bas des Sept Grés, located at Montereau-Fault-Yonne in Seine-et-Marne, form a group of four stones planted in an inclined manner. Measuring about 1 metre in height for 30 cm in side, their square or sub-rectangular sections and squared faces suggest that they are old bounds rather than prehistoric megaliths. Their provision has sometimes been interpreted as a megalithic alignment, but this hypothesis is now contested by the experts.
Ranked a historic monument in 1889, this site intrigues by its origin and function. Although their dating is associated with Neolithic, their atypical shape and size for traditional menhirs suggest re-use or further transformation. The stones, located at 31 Chemin des 7 Grès, remain an enigmatic testimony of ancient practices in the region.
The precise location of the site, noted as "passable" (level 5/10), is located near La Grande-Paroisse, in an area where traces of human occupation go back to prehistory. The absence of sources detailing their exact use or their connection to neolithic rituals reinforces their mystery, while highlighting their heritage value recognized since the 19th century.
