Origin and history
The chapel of the White Penitents, located in Lambesc in the Bouches-du-Rhône, is a religious building built in 1634, as attested by the inscription on its façade. It is part of the tradition of the chapels of penitents, typical of Provence from the 17th and 18th centuries, and is distinguished by its painted decoration made in 1761 by the painter Senes, originally from Toulon. These frescoes, characteristic of the religious art of the time, reflect the importance of the brotherhoods of penitents in the spiritual and social life of the region.
Ranked a historic monument since 1 April 1996, the chapel experienced a significant episode during the French Revolution, when it was sold as a national property in 1796. This change in status illustrates the political and religious upheavals of the period, while emphasizing the heritage value of the building. Today, it remains an architectural and artistic testimony of Provencal devotional practices, linked to the history of the secular brotherhoods.
The building, located at 30 Voltaire Street in Lambesc, retains a central place in the local heritage. Its listing in the inventory of historical monuments guarantees the preservation of its remarkable elements, such as the paintings of Senes and its original structure. The chapel thus embodies both a religious heritage, a revolutionary memory and an example of Provencal Baroque art, anchored in the urban landscape of Lambesc.
