Ancient Caves: Registration by decree of 28 January 1944
Origin and history
The old cellars of the building located 30 rue de la Bretonnerie in Pontoise (Val-d的Oise) date from the 13th century. They constitute a remarkable medieval vestige, classified as Historical Monument by decree of 28 January 1944. These cellars used to serve as a cellar for the Maladrerie de Saint-Ouen-l'Aumône, an institution dedicated to welcoming lepers and patients in the Middle Ages. Their exact location remains approximate, with cartographic accuracy considered poor (note 5/10).
The Maladrerie de Saint-Ouen-l'Aumône, to which these cellars were attached, illustrates the medieval charity in Île-de-France. Maladries, often located on the outskirts of cities, played a crucial social and religious role, providing care and isolation for people with contagious diseases such as leprosy. These institutions generally depended on religious orders or local lords, although the source text does not specify their sponsor for this specific case.
The inscription of the cellars as part of the Historic Monuments in 1944 underscores their heritage value, despite the lack of architectural details in the available sources. Their current state, accessibility to the public or contemporary use (visit, rental, etc.) are not documented. The data are mainly from the Merimée database and Monumentum, without additional local archives or recent studies.
