Origin and history
The Altorf well is a water well dating from the early 17th century, located in Altorf, in the department of Lower Rhine. It has been a historic monument since 1937. This Renaissance-style well is distinguished by its architecture: a circular margin wall flanked by two pedestals bearing an ion column and a lintel in a building. Originally, he was placed in the interior garden of the abbey, then moved in 1973-74 to the square near the church.
The chaperon lintel of the well bears the wooded coat of arms of Abbé Antoine Gug and the date of 1739. Originally located in the garden of the presbytery, it was moved for unknown reasons, but a project plans to return to its original location. This well is a typical example of the religious and utility architecture of the Alsatian region in the seventeenth century.
The well of Altorf is now located in Place Saint-Cyriaque, in the heart of the village. It is owned by the commune and is part of the historical monuments of the Bas-Rhin. Its registration in 1937 reflects its heritage importance and historical value to the region.
