Origin and history
The former workshop of Victor Vasarely, located in Annet-sur-Marne (Seine-et-Marne), was built in the 3rd quarter of the 20th century, more precisely in 1966. This place was designed by the artist himself, inspired by the functional principles of Bauhaus and Le Corbusier, to house his works and those of his assistants. Vasarely, a major figure in optical art, worked there for more than thirty years, combining workshops, exhibition hall and ancillary spaces. The construction was entrusted to the local architects Le Pair and Lardat, on a plot adjacent to his residence.
The building reflects a modern and rational approach, typical of the artistic avant-gardes of the twentieth century. It includes several dedicated spaces: workshops for the production of works, a large exhibition room, as well as amenities and reserves. The whole, including the facades, roofs and ground of the plot, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 26 January 2023, emphasizing its heritage importance. The exact location, 55bis Rue aux Reliques in Annet-sur-Marne, confirms its anchoring in the territory of France.
Victor Vasarely (1906–1997), born Victor Vásárhelyi, settled in Annet-sur-Marne in 1961 after an international career marked by visual innovation. This workshop became the heart of his creation, where he developed iconic works of Op Art, a movement he helped to found. The site, now protected, bears witness to its artistic and architectural heritage, combining functionality and avant-garde aesthetics. The architects Le Pair and Lardat, although less well known, played a key role in the materialization of his vision.
