Origin and history

The former court audience of Contilly is a monument located in the commune of Contilly, in the department of Sarthe, in the Pays de la Loire region. This building, whose original function was related to the administration of justice, was registered under the Historical Monuments by order of 16 February 2018. Its right of way is delimited on the cadastre, section D, Parcel No. 284, and it is protected in its entirety.

Justice audiences, such as that of Contilly, played a central role in the social and judicial organization of small French municipalities. These places served not only to do justice, but also to regulate local conflicts, often linked to rural life or seigneurial rights. In the Pays de la Loire, a region marked by a strong agricultural and artisanal tradition, these buildings were symbols of authority and community cohesion.

Their architecture often reflected their function, with spaces dedicated to hearings and deliberations.
